Banning Superintelligence Won't Save Us — But Ignoring It Might

Bernie Sanders wants to ban superintelligence — and while the instinct is understandable, the approach misses the point entirely.

Banning superintelligence isn't a safety strategy. It's a headline.

Senator Sanders proposed federal legislation this week to pause advanced AI development and permanently ban superintelligence. I get the impulse — the stakes are real, and the pace is genuinely unnerving.

But here's the problem: you can't legislate away a global technology race with a domestic pause button.

While the U.S. debates bans, China, the EU, and a dozen well-funded private labs will keep building. What we actually need isn't a freeze — it's a framework.

  • Clear liability structures for AI-driven harm
  • Mandatory transparency requirements (Instagram is already moving here)
  • International coordination, not unilateral stoppage

The companies I work with aren't building recklessly — they're building fast because the market demands it. Regulation needs to match that speed with precision, not panic.

AI governance is one of the most important business conversations of our time. Let's make sure it's led by people who understand the technology.
